Articulate Rise course
Title: Gmail Signature
Tool: Articulate Rise
Time: 4 days
Idol Courses assignment
Collaborators: Idol Academy mentors
This course was designed for skills practice using the Articulate Rise site. This was my first experience using the tool and I found it easy to maneuver and add in content and images. The assignment was to create a simple course over any topic we wanted. Since I was limited to a free trial period, I chose a simple 'How to' instructional guide for setting up a Gmail signature.
The only criteria were to create a quick lesson within a day and submit for feedback. After the initial submission I took the feedback and make edits recommended by mentors in the academy. The edits involved some grammar, simple edits to focus areas on my images, and to rework a scenario-based knowledge check into a matching activity.
My design process started with a simple outline of the objectives of the course overall and with each step in the process of learning to add a Gmail signature. I then created the course itself on the tool. I worked on this prior to a storyboard as I had not had any experience with it and would not be able to create a storyboard laying out each step, and with which blocks I chose to use for each section of the lesson. Normally I use a backward design process to align learning activities to course objectives.
What I learned from the process of building this course were the basic workings of the Rise tool, storyboarding, and which elements of this type of tool work well with the lessons or activities in the course itself. There are a couple of things I would do differently or tweak if I could go back into the editing field, but I now know better for next time. Several non-mentor testers ran through the course to check for accessibility and ease of use and gave positive feedback. I am definitely comfortable using Articulate Rise to build courses in the future.
Title: Bloom's Taxonomy
Tool: 7 Taps
Time: 1 day
Self-learning project
This course was designed out of my own curiosity for microlearning and the use of the tool 7 Taps. I wanted a short course that could be used by myself or others that need reminders of Bloom's Taxonomy verbs when creating courses.
The only criteria, recommended by 7 Taps, was that each chapter in the course use 7 pages or less. All of the images were supplied by the authoring tool and, while limited, I still had great options.
My design process was brief for this one. The topic can be broad or brief and originally, I was only going to have 1 chapter and have it as brief as possible with only an example. After outlining each part of Bloom's, I realized I needed to add in a definition and then an example of each level and then a small break between the lower and higher levels and then also add in a link to a more thorough list of Bloom's verbs.
What I learned was that even a microlearning course needs planning before building. I shared this course on LinkedIn and received positive feedback, affirming that it was not only a fun way to learn and reinforce information, but that many people are receptive to microlearning as a viable learning solution.
